This 20-mile paved scenic trail between Red Wing and Cannon Falls runs along the original Chicago Great Western Railroad line and runs through tiny Welch near the midway point. Running along the Cannon River, the trail provides glimpses of owls, birds, and wildflowers along the route. You’ll ride past prairies, wetlands, and woods and may catch a glimpse of folks in canoes, kayaks, and tubes along the waterway. Grab breakfast, lunch, or ice cream in Welch at the Trout Scream Cafe then relax with cheese and wine at the Cannon Falls Winery.
This 10-mile round-trip ride is flat and easy enough for novices and experts alike. Along the way you’ll cross multiple small bridges over Hay Creek, say hello to a few cows, listen to the birds, and spot a few horses as you reach Hay Creek Campground. Bike through the camp ground to The Old Western Saloon for some ice cream, beverages, or good old-fashioned hamburgers and cheese curds before traveling back the way you came. Catch the trail at the Old West Main/Tile Drive intersection or the Pioneer/Featherstone Rd. intersection.
